Methods to ensure a sustainable future
The world has been concerned with the increased levels of global warming. Several campaigns have come up in an attempt to persuade the human race to preserve the environment. Karen Nachay has authored an article entitled “In Search of Sustainability” that offers several solutions or guidelines that people can follow to conserve the environment in which they live. It centers on consumer habits that contribute to the degradation of the environment and offers straightforward solutions to consumers and producers on ways of maintaining a sustainable environment. Her solutions are mostly effective, but in other ways, they may prove difficult to implement.
The way in which factories package their products contributes to the levels of sustainability or deprivation of the environment. Scientists recommend farmers to grow their products in ways that do not damage the soil or environment in which they produce their products. They recommend that they partake in farming practices that do not encourage soil erosion. They also discourage usage of chemically produced fertilizers that may have unalterable damages on the soil. She also recommends farmers to control the amounts of water they use for irrigation to avoid the water carrying away the soil. The article encourages consumers to purchase products that only appear as fair trade items because they have undergone the processes that she recommends.
This recommendation is ideal as it seeks to repay producers a fair price for their crops. Some issues may arise in certain areas that may unable farmers carry out the above named recommendations. In certain areas of the world, there are farmers that rely primarily on agriculture as their means of income. Such areas often have trouble with sufficient supply of water for irrigation and the soil in most of these areas is eroded. The article does not offer guidelines for such farmers whereby they can make the best of the situations they find themselves. It does not give options to farmers that have eroded land or to those that do not have adequate water supply for proper irrigation.
The article also mentions the use of green energy from industries. Manufacturers require large surges of power to enable production of mass goods for distribution. The power required for such a process is expensive and harnessing it from the wind or from water is not only environmental friendly, but it is also cheap. Countries in the African and Asian regions take advantage of their dams and rivers to harness geothermal energy. She recommends the production of plastic materials using biodegradable plastic while attempting to reduce the amount of packaging used entirely. Some grocery stores have adopted the usage of sisal bags that are more environmental friendly compared to the brown ones supplied in stores.
Manufacturers realize that consumers mostly purchase green goods. It is a shame, however, that some companies advertise their goods as being green even when they are not. They see it as an opportunity to put sales through the roof. Companies must continue to see the value of putting into practice sustainable practices. The manufacturers should educate their consumers on the importance of recycling. The organizations should also come up with initiatives that promote green living. The small steps taken by the companies may appear trivial, but they go a long way to conserve the environment.
