My experience as an international student in the United States
To be an international student in the United States is quite exciting. First, I felt like I was a new child since I had to start from scratch to study their style of teaching, school community and curriculum. I was an art student. I met quite a number of people including people from Asia and Europe. The Asians students were quite antisocial because they could hardly talk to me. However, I found it quite easy to befriend the European students, especially the girls. Several of the female international students were also easy to befriend. In my experience as an international student, I noted the different cultural backgrounds of students in campus.
For the campus, there was no much urgency. The classes were not as difficult as the ones that I had back at home. Since I had attended my first lesson, I have not got any assignment, although I expect some. I have also taken part in two group projects, which I must admit, were quite challenging. I got quite a different experience while I worked in groups of 6 to ten people. I did not concentrate much on the group works since the final exams were the largest contributed to the final grade. I could hardly do the quizzes or tests. The classes were exciting for most of the times, although I found myself bored occasionally.
My campus has a large population of Christians. There are always people who are willing to invite me to church. Majority of students in the school love and believe in God. The campus is quite holy. The students praise God in the same manner that my people do it back at home. Campus had a lot of prayer meetings, church services, choir rehearsals and bible studies. There were large and small groups of students who would pray around campus every day. I was surprised to hear groups of student’s speaking in tongues while I walked back to my room in campus.
The majority of students have impressive dressing. There are quite a number of students who put on the casual wear. Quite a number of students dress well to give a good impression. The males dress in collared shirts and slacks. Some dress in jeans and sandals. Quite a number of the females dress in jeans, skirts and sandals. The males would shave their hair neatly. It was not common to see the males with afros or cornrows. There were also the Rastafarian communities who would have dreadlocks, although it was not quite common in campus. The females would put perm hair or braids while others would just remain natural. There is not much diversity in cultures, in campus. There were quite q number of white students. The black students were not as many as the white students. Despite the racial differences, most of the students shared common cultures.
As far as my experience is concerned, to be an international student is what one makes of it. For instance, some students love being in the campus environment and community while others do not like being around. The students who love campus take part in almost all the activities in campus like sports, athletics and clubs. There are some students who do not like such activities and would always stay alone. These students would often attend classes, do their assignments or watch movies. All of these students will have different experiences in colle
