My experience in New York
My encounter with the people of New York
New York is a place that has a variety of languages, races, ethnicities, cultures, religions and nationalities. With my experience in New York, I got a chance to meet an array of inhabitants on a daily basis. An experience that I will hardly forget took place when I was in a Reptile House in Bronx. This was on a Saturday evening. I often saw Puerto Rican families in the afternoons walking in the parks. They usually went with their children, who were dressed elegantly. The small boys would put on petite neckties and suits, and the small girls often appeared like movie stars or child brides. The children were highly excited such that they often repeated the same word again. I could also hear the double exclamation because of their strange accent. This had been the order that developed their identity to give the city its unique feature.
When I went to at an exhibition presentation of an ugly frog, a young Puerto Rican girl dressed in a colorful manner had been standing with her father. She was reflecting on the lost frog. This was in Bronx, in the Reptile house. Suddenly, she shouted in Spanish the same word. She also talked of the cute little girl and the ugly frog. I was shocked and wondered why she had to repeat the same word again. I kept on questioning myself why the little girl had to repeat the same word. Perhaps it was my misunderstanding. I kept on imagining if this was the child’s first stumble with a frog while she was with her parents. I concluded that she might have only had experience with a frog in books or in songs. The confrontation that the frog brought to the little girl with her parents might have only taken place while she was in school.
My subway experience
While, in New York, I recognized that the city had two distinct features that are the skyscrapers and the subways. I lived in a sixth floor apartment. I would walk while I went for a tour in town since I lived close to the city center. I loved the brilliance of the subways. The area was superb, especially at night when I took a walk. The streetlights illuminated the whole city, and it looked beautiful. I thought that I was the only person who would be walking in the streets, but I recognized that there were several New Yorkers who walk while going to work. One of my friends who owned a car would pay more rent to the garage than what I would pay for my apartment.
Another of my colleagues whom I had studied with in college paid me a visit. We would walk around the city. While we were on the subways of Manhattan, we realized that the subways run up and down to the west and east side. There was also the 42nd Street Shuttle. The place was always occupied with automobiles. The city was jammed with lots of automobiles. We had a rough times looking for a vehicle to board. We also boarded a train, and we were glad to have found empty seats since the train is always full of people. The train was in the underground tunnels. This train was fast compared to the ones that I have seen before. There were lots of passengers on board. Someone was staring at us while we were on the train. Sometime later, the train left before we had a better look at the mysterious on looker.
After staying in Time Square for one week, I walked to the Greenwich Village. While I walked across the street, I saw a synagogue. The synagogue had a large hall of prayer. I decided to have a walk in the synagogue. I saw some small study rooms and a social hall. The interior deco was brilliant. When I walked to the ark, I saw it was closed with an ornate curtain. I also saw a place full of books. It must have been the reader’s platform. Although it was daytime, there were several lit lambs. There were also numerous seats arranged around the sanctuary’s perimeter. There were some people praying while facing the ark.
While I was walking along the streets, I kept on imagining about my experiences. Suddenly, I stumbled across an old woman who was almost falling from the high stoops. I thought of doing something to assist the old woman. Other people came out of the buildings to help the old woman. There was a woman who came over in a rush. She must have been a nurse. She shouted for someone to call an ambulance. I volunteered to carry her leashes. Within a few moments, there was an ambulance and other nurses put the old woman in the ambulance. This experienced proved to me how the New Yorkers value life.
