1. Study of insomnia
A. Alabama Nurse
Background
Roberson needs review about the usual causes and the treatment associated with themb (Roberson, 2011). The paper mainly concentrated on the different risk factors accompanying the disease. The subject was the Alabama board of nursing which exclusively talk about insomnia. The size of the study depended on the nurses who were to volunteer for the subject study. Alabama nursing hall was the area of study with the nurses presenting themselves. The length of study was 2 hours. They used questionnaires for the research.
Results
• The research found that those who suffering from insomnia always associate to weight problems.
• Women had a high chance of being attacked by the disease as related to their counterparts.
Conclusion
` The author therefore notes that insomnia mainly depends on the behavioural factors of an individual and therefore if there is need to reduce the risk factors they have to modify on their behavioral patterns.
B. Journal Of Public Mental Health
Background
In his research article, Robotham talks about insomnia in relation to the mental health to the patient. The subjects were therefore collected randomly (Robotham, 2011). This could help him in comparing between those affected by insomnia and those who were free from insomnia. He did not also specify the area in which his study was to be done with the provision that insomnia is common in every area. The size of the study therefore consisted of both the affected and the non-affected.
Result
• Those who were affected by the insomnia were usually susceptible to mental diseases
• The patients also tend not to have a higher percentage of concentration.
Conclusion
The research concludes that there is need for intensive public health care for this field because of the effect the disease have on the victims. They conclude that beside the sleep medication there is need to introduce the cognitive behavioral therapy, which proves to be suitable (Robotham, 2011).
C. American Journal Of Managed Care
Background
The main subject for their study is on the risks and the costs related to insomnia. The research was therefore carried on people suffering from the disease, all ages and genders. The size of study therefore depended on the number of patients. For the researcher to achieve their ambition of the study, they needed approximately one month for the study. The study methodology mainly involved use of questionnaires on the patients asking them the type of expense they experienced.
Result
• They assert that the annual direct cost of insomnia has been on the rise with about billions of dollars being spent on the treatment of the disease (Rosekind & Gregory, 2010).
• They assert that the patient associated with more emergency visit to the physician hence leading to wastage of time and money.
The authors therefore conclude that the healthcare cost related to the disease can only reduce if there is earlier diagnosis and subsequent treatment of the disease.
Analysis of the result
All the result from the three studies talks about the effect of Insomnia on the patients and the community as a whole. This therefore introduces the issue of need for the treatment of the disease because its impacts are far reaching from mental health to the high cost that associates with the disease.
Difference between the study and the other studies
Because the study involves three different researches which were done at different time and place, it is therefore witnessed that the result may differ from other studies. This is because there is need to analyze the different studies and arrive at a uniform result. Improvement of the research will come as the result of the research taking place at the same time and place.
Answer to questions
2. What is the role of serotonin and depression?
The serotonin acts as a chemical, which relays signals from one area of the brain to another. Imbalance of the serotonin therefore leads to depression in the human beings.
Are there complementary alternatives that might be used to treat mild depression?
Antidepressant medications help in increasing the amount serotonin levels hence helping in the treatment.
Discuss the benefits and precautions for herbal treatment.
Benefits
• The herbal treatment are always cheap as compared to the antidepressant which are expensive.
• The herbal treatment is also reliable as they can be regenerated through maintaining good care of the plants
Precautions
• The herbal treatment is not fit for the pregnant women or even the elderly
5. Death from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis usually results from respiratory infection secondary to compromised respiratory function. Explain why.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis comes as the result of the spinal cord leading to the respiratory system being not able to function. The amyotrophic lateral sclerosis causes the weakening of the muscles in the abdomen thus restricting air from moving into or out of the lungs. This therefore presents ALS as a respiratory infection rather than a respiratory function (Marieb & Hoehn, 2010). The ALS is disease that affects the nerve cells present in the brain consequently affecting the transfer of signals from the respiratory organs to the control system.
The inhibition of the brain from sending signals through the nerve cells results to respiratory infection. The ASL therefore occurs when the muscles become hard making it difficult to breathe, as the muscles will stop its functioning. For this reason, the ALS accompanies respiratory infection instead of the proper functioning of the respiratory system.
