In the monogram May describes the link between foreign, political policy and family diversity during post cold war eras. Immediately after the end of world war, two Americans embarked on marrying each other and marriages remained stable for a longer period. At the time people were involved in married and had many children because they though may be another war was going to break out therefore having many children meant some of them will be saved if a war outbreak took place. Their big families were taken to be some sort of security against enemies.
This was in contrast to the previous generations especially during the depression period. The period was characterized by difficult financial strains resulting to marriages and birth rates to be lower than initially anticipated. Divorces were at their peak at the time, the decreased rate in marriages was because of fear that engulfed families that the man would not be able to provide for the new family. In addition, the period was characterized by increased employment for the female gender and their rights in society improved by a bigger margin. The women felt they had their lives in control since they could cater for themselves through employment and dependency on men had reduced greatly. The women did not see the necessity of marriage and they preferred to be single since employment seemed satisfactory enough. The generations after the world war two era did not embrace the issue of marriage instead they concentrated on developing the destroyed world. The economy was greatly affected and people had to work extra miles to meet daily needs.
The generation after the world war, two was also engulfed with sexual fears because the atomic bombs used instilled fear in them of the future. The generation was characterized by prostitution, pornography and premarital sex. Therefore, young people were encouraged to marry at an early age to discourage the spread of evil behavior. Birth control invention was on the increase and families had an option of not having too many children at their will. Therefore, the increased birthrate after the war indicated that the people had all the intentions of having many children.
The women embarked on learning tactics of protection incase another war outbreak took place. They learnt methods of storing food and how to make bomb shelters. Their houses also had first aid kits to cater for any emergencies that may take place. The post war era had televisions and the media was always on the alert to inform if they were in danger or not. Unlike the previous era who did not have any worries of what was taking place outside their home areas. This was because there was no one to inform them of any dangers that would take place. Most of the time they were caught in ambush. Experts in various fields informed people if they were in any dangers including how to raise their children and save their marriages. Therapy was now in practice and many people though it was a good solution to families faced with disputes and troubles.
The period was also characterized by rise in consumer goods making the life of Americans difficult. People worked hard to avoid communism and existence of people in classes. House construction became the business venture to pursue. The generation differed greatly from the previous generation that concentrated majorly in farming activities and working in factories. Life was a bit easier because people majorly depended on farm products. The generation that existed after the post war invaded by advanced technology that made their lives much easier. Machines replaced human labor and a number of people lost their jobs. People had to embrace the advanced technology and take careers in the field of technology to be marketable in the job market.
Women concentrated on marriage and raising their children and cases of divorce were hardly unheard. Family therapy sought to ensure divorce did not take place. The previous and the later generation were professionals who majorly wanted independence and freedom. Marriage institution was not a priority in career women.
The author concentrated majorly in the marriage institutions and raising of children, the economic situation after the post war was slightly discussed without a proper solution discussed to the situation. The author also did not put into account how the children were bought up and the lifestyle adopted at the time. The minority communities were also forgotten although African Americans were given a little concentration.
May concentrated on insisting that the marriage and bearing of children was the focus of the people in this generation for security purposes. How the children interacted with their parents did not have a great importance to the author. The discussion how the children grew up, education and interaction with their peers was also overlooked. The children of the post war generation were known to be rebellious to their parents since they did not agree on a common ground about lifestyle. Marriage and family were not only the main issues that covered the period after war but the author concentrated on family forgetting to narrate other aspects of life that contributed to the changes that took place after the war.
