HD2 Online Discussion
An online discussion means an ongoing discussion or dialogue with other members of the
class. Responses are made to questions or statements posted by the instructor and the discussion
is by students in the class or group. The term “discussion” implies much more than such
statements as “I agree” or “That’s okay with me” or “Me, too”.
Why engage in online discussion
Share knowledge. Every person has a unique set of experiences and learning. Sharing
individual “expertise” through online discussions provides enrichment for others and helps the
student expert clarify his/her own knowledge on the subject
Reflect on ideas. Reflection helps to clarify concepts and internalize the information-toknowledge
process.
Improve critical thinking. Interactions and in-depth reflections require critical thinking
that involves the ability to compare, contrast, analyze, synthesize, and
