What is Child Psychology

There are different approaches used by other professionals in their line of work that can be applied when working with children. These approaches can be tackled either by the individual professional or through a collective effort.
The holistic approach taken up by Physiotherapy can be rightfully applied when dealing with children and their families. Its use of “a diversity of clinical specialties to meet the unique needs of client groups” (Bundy, 2005, p.8) can be used bearing in mind that each child is uniquely different and must thus be dealt with differently. The philosophy that “engagement in meaningful occupations promotes health, well-being and quality of life” (Bundy, 2005, p.8) as used by Occupational therapists can be applied when dealing with children and their families. Engaging children and their families in activities that add value to their lives can be beneficial in your work with them since they become more receptive and cooperative.
While there are generally three different team approaches used; interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary in therapy, transdisciplinary approach is the most preferred. It is the most compatible when dealing with “person-centered and family-centered services.” (Bundy, 2005, p.11) In this approach it assumes all team members take up active participation in decision making responsibilities, planning and implementation. The same can be applied when working with children and families whereby actively involving them in ones projects can prove beneficial to ones work.
