Presentation Creation Tools
For the longest time, Microsoft PowerPoint has been the set standard tool for the creation of slide presentation. It has indeed laid the blueprint from which other presentation creation tools have been created from. This including, Keynote (its equivalent by Apple), Prezi, Google Docs Presentation, Brainshark, Flipsnack, Sliderocket, Flair, 280slides among others. While we cannot exhaustively look at all the new apps that have recently come up in the market, we can, however focus our sights on the most popular ones and ones which deviate slightly from the traditional slide presentation format: Prezi and Keynote
Compare and Contrast To Microsoft PowerPoint
Prezi: This is a web-based /Windows/Linux/Mac application that is unlike the normal default presentation tools. It is available in basic, free and pro editions.
Prezi, unlike, PowerPoint offers dynamic presentations that does not make use of slides. Instead it uses one big canvas that explores features such as zooming in on objects, rotation, ‘use of scale and location of objects to define relations and importance’ (www.Makeuseof.com). It also offers dynamic transitions and non-linear presenting that excludes the traditional slide by slide format common in PowerPoint making it more engaging as compared to PowerPoint. Since it is a web-based application, it can offer up to 100MB of free web-based storage for a free account. And use of the premium account allows for more storage and privacy since you can compose your work offline.
Google Docs Presentation:
It is also a web-based application that is part of the lager Google Apps set of web-based tools. In relation to PowerPoint it offers for creation of online presentations, but one can however upload their Powerpoint presentation to Google Docs Presentation. It also offers cloud-based backup and reliability like most other Google apps, unlike PowerPoint.
Advantages and Disadvantage
Prezi : -Easy to create non-traditional professional looking presentations.
-Gives one the opportunity to creative and ambitious with their presentation
Disadvantage -The presentation create are publicly available on their web site except for premium users.
-One has to compose the presentation online.
Google Docs Presentations:- It is free and easy to use as long as you have a Google account
-Allows sharing and collaboration of work which is suitable for teams
-There is cloud-based backup and one can work from anywhere.
Disadvantages – To make use of all the features effectively one requires a good grasp of the inner workings of Google presentation.
– Its graphics tools and features are not as many as other software.
Conclusion: Application In Business Environments.
While both Prezi and Google Docs are powerful tools that can be used to create really good presentations,
Google docs is better suited in a business environment where team work presentation is key or, where
organizations work with long distant consultants since it allows for sharing and collaboration.
Prezi, however, is the kind of tool that gives one an opportunity to create ambitious and compelling presentations that can keep once audience captivated and interested. Such can be used in business environments such as marketing where presentations are as important as the content. It also requires environments where ideas can be brought out in a wholesome light as opposed to a systematic step-by-step flow of ideas. This is because Prezi makes use of one big canvas where all the presentation is featured on.
