Social deviance refers to any act against social norms. There many forms of social deviance that exists in today’s societies but varies from one society to another. For example, the Kenyan society does not consent to homosexuals be it between men (gay) or between women (lesbian) which is unlike other society such as Britain and American where even gay marriages have been legalized. Instances of social deviance are: being gay, killing people, not wearing clothes in public, incest, theft, and so on.
In Kenya’s Daily Nation, 28th September 2012 featured a short article on lesbian students of Pangani Girls’ School in Nairobi who were sent home. This article reported that the principal Ms Nyambong’i had received a list of eight girls who were alleged to be lesbians and also suspected to have planned to burn down the school on September 10. These girls were investigated by the school’s counseling and guidance department and some of the girls admitted to being lesbians and that they had lovers within the school while other denied that allegation. They were later sent home but some who promised to change were given another chance and they were readmitted to the school. At end of the interview with the principal, Ms Nyambong’i, she termed lesbianism as a crime that would not be tolerated at the learning institution. Similarly, another case was reported by Daily Nation, 12th February 2012 that involved 12 girls at Moi Girls’ School in Kilifi.
From the above case, it is evident enough to prove that the Kenyan communities are against homosexuality and the communities are willing to help homosexuals change so that homosexuality can be erased in this Kenyan society.
