Remembering our legacy
I volunteered at St. Luke, a nursing home located in my hometown Blue Earth, MN. I did this volunteer work in my last year of high school. “Remembering our legacy” is the project that I decided to volunteer on. I headed out to the nursing home in Blue Earth and got to know the elderly citizens that were living there. I had them talk to me about their past. My mission was to try to help the elderly in their developmental progress. My mission was also to learn about important facts that would lead me towards academic excellence. I wanted to how the world of today differed from the world of previous years. Many of the elderly people in St. Luke were nurses, and most of the men were war veterans. Others were ordinary workers brought there by their families because they could not take care of themselves because of their old age.
The mission statement welcomes all people from all across the globe. There is no consideration of a one’s faith. The mission statement welcomes all people regardless of their religious affiliation. The mission challenges people to improve their academic performance in school. It encourages a student to move towards academic excellence in their respective schools. The church encourages the development of a person. This development takes the form of spiritual, mental and physical development of a person as a whole. The mission statement encourages this development in all people.
My volunteer work at St. Luke spears me towards academic excellence. My mission to volunteer at St. Luke has enabled me to increase my intellectual knowledge as a whole. During my time there, I got a chance to interact with the elderly people. Scholars say that a person’s wisdom grows as one gets older. By spending time there, I now agreed to the statement because I found the elderly people to be quite knowledgeable. The men at the nursing home were mostly war veterans who were former military officials. They told me that they had fought in numerous wars for the nation. They unraveled the history of the country to me as I took into note all information given. I now knew why some wars came to be.
The women were mostly previous nurses working for leading hospitals across the country. Through my interaction with them, I knew how the world of medicine had changed over the years. Numerous technological advancements had taken place. Current nurse use technology to take care of patience and ensure they are of good health. The elderly in St. Luke had now taken the time to develop their spirituality by turning to God for salvation. My interaction with them also made me develop my inner spiritual self that made me grow and develop as a whole.
Objectives
Happiness
Every human being wants to be happy. Everyone wants to lead a happy and the good life. It is common knowledge that everyone has his own definition of happiness. Many people want to be successful in their life. Success to them is to have a lot of money to enable them to buy anything that they need. A comfortable life with no lack of material needs leads to happiness. Other people believe that service to God is the true source of leaving a happy life. My volunteer work made me believe in this as I could see the happiness in the elderly since most of them had sought salvation from the church. Salvation leads to the development and well-being of an individual spiritually, mentally and physically.
Common human nature
Common human nature suggests that if all human beings share the same human nature then the description of ‘good’ is same for all people. Ethics determine whether an action is good or bad. Human needs common to all people determine whether an action is ‘good’ or not regardless of one’s opinions. My volunteer work enabled me to understand that all people have different opinions to certain types of actions. People refer to some actions as bad while others regard the same actions as good. Development of a person occurs when a person does good things.
