I was triaging a woman who had been bit by a dog in her right hand. The woman came alone with no family member. She has visible puncture wounds in her hand, along with swelling and redness. She told me that her finger were completely numb and that her hand was in pain. I decided that because of the hand numbness, possible tendon damage, the amount of pain she was in, and the wounds on her hand , this patient should be made a level 3 and stay in the emergency room instead of urgent care area. I called over the radio for a level 3 dog bite and was assigned a room. The nurse that was going to receive this woman as her patient marched into my triage room picked up this woman hand and said to me “why cant she go to urgent care”? I politely excused myself and walked to the nurses’ station with the nurse and told her why she was staying in the emergency room. The nurse looked at me and said “you know she is just a drug seeker, she comes here all the time”. There was nothing I could say to the nurse, she was convinced that the woman was faking her pain. I was left with a sobbing patient because the nurse caused more pain by picking up her hand and a co-worker who was angry that she was “given” a so called “drug seeker”
