Seeking equality
The writer Roiphe of the article seeking equality is a female writer writing to advocate the rights of women in the society. She addresses women mainly in her articles trying to empower and educate them on their roles in the society. She writes to address male chauvinism effect and show the vice takes place in the society. This she writes via her essays by exploring her earlier life in marriage and her experiences. The writer is categorical to support the fact that the men in the society overpower women.
The essay she writes supports that women are submissive to the men in the society. She says this through giving an example of her experience like men being heavy drinkers and wastes money since they think beyond beer bottles. She sometimes becomes rhetorical when at some point, she tries to advocate for women to be self-dependent but the women she addresses are still look at the male support in the society. The support they seek financially and in the form of security.
Women are inferior to the males as explained by Roiphe. This she explains when she tried to seek permission to go out. She could not make the decision alone but first had to seek permission from her mother in order for her to go for dates. Men are seen to be superior to the women. The society perceives men to do some tasks that women cannot do. Jobs like welding generally are done by men and the women neglected. Women mostly do house chore duties while the men work in the fields.
Male chauvinism is rampant in the society. For example, there is a perception in the society that women cannot hold big positions in the government. Some communities believe that women cannot rule them by being their president. A woman is looked down upon whenever she stands out to fight for an elective position. Most people will not vote her to that position. This is mostly in the Middle East countries and some of the African countries. The whites or European countries tries to fight this negative act but a woman still cannot stand for a political seat if she has no political agenda.
Men superiority is also seen in some African and in the Middle East. This is because some cultures, there is a perception that men are never promiscuous. If a man is unfaithful, he is just seen to be a man but if a woman is unfaithful, she is perceived to be an outcast and can even be killed. This can be done if the woman is just purported without even being proved. Male chauvinism is also seen in marriages especially during divorce period. When this happens, the children will stay with the dad since the law does not allow the woman to have those rights. This act is seen in most Middle East countries since it is based on the religious laws.
The same language is also spoken in some European countries. A woman might not necessarily be killed when he plays the husband or the boyfriend. The male chauvinism will is epitomized when the woman is referred to names and labeled different titles. To a man if he does, he is just a man. However much male chauvinism takes place, the writer becomes rhetorical. She to some extent blames the women for causing the problems themselves. This she says because the women make themselves submissive to the men. They do not come out to look for themselves but depends on the men.
Roiphe to some extent does not agree with the male chauvinist fact. She is optimistic and believes that what men can do, women can do best. This she support by arguing her case that the man who never loved and cared for her was just like her father. Some tasks that men do, women can also do however much that they may not do it to perfection.
Women being her target audience, the writer highlights that they should try to be self-independent. The belief that men are superior to women should not arise since both she views them to be equal. She claims that both men and women are equal in and have the same mind setting. She clarifies that her mother mostly met her financial obligations and gives hope to the women that to some extent men can also depend on women to meet their financial obligations. The world is changing since there are some laws crafted to advocate for women rights. The women have been empowered to know their rights and the laws assist in their development.
In conclusion, the writer supports that male chauvinism actually occurs in the society but gives hope to the women to take active roles to prevent the menace. She advices men not to over ride their powers against women and those men should not mistreat the women in the society. Male chauvinism is a fact that happens but the vice should be on the minimal. From the various examples, the writer insists that the vice takes place but gives hope to women.
