Report Guidelines Formatting – Typed, double-spaced on 8.5” by 11” paper with one-inch margins. Use Times New Roman size 12 font. – Write at least 3 full pages in essay format. – Follow standard formatting. Titles of pieces must be set in italics (for example, the opera Don Giovanni by Mozart). Titles of individual numbers (such as an aria) within an opera or within a larger work are set in “quotes” (for example, the duet “La cì darem la mano,” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni). – Do not copy the program notes, or content from other sources. You may use ONLY the Oxford Music Online/The New Grove Encyclopedia of Music and Musicians (online through Shatford Library or in the Music Lab) as a reference. Use it sparingly (no more than 3 sentences), with proper citation. Plagiarism or any other form of academic dishonesty (cheating) will result in a grade of F for the assignment and/or possibly the course. Do not use sources such as Wikipedia, About.com, blogs, etc. These are not appropriate for college assignments. The Library provides online information on proper citation. – Only properly written and proofread papers (free of spelling and grammatical errors) can receive credit. Content Your paper will need to have a proper introduction, body, and conclusion. It is a report-type research paper. You will need to include a thesis (=topic sentence), preferably in the first paragraph. See College Level Essays and Writing A Thesis Statement for more detail. Please address the following items in your paper: TYPE(S) OF MUSIC Name the librettist, the historical era in which the opera originates, the performing forces (orchestra, chamber orchestra, piano, voice, etc.), the voice types were the main characters. Describe the opera program you received, give a brief (not more than five sentences) plot summary. Were there any spoken remarks before, during or after the performance? Could you follow the order of the performance? Did you read about the work(s) before or after the performance in the approved source? Were there any aspects of the performance that were unfamiliar to you? If so, which? Were there any aspects about the performance conventions that surprised you? Which? *** Choose two numbers (but not overture or chorus) from the opera and contrast and compare these works with references to specific musical and dramatic elements. If you are viewing an opera we have discussed in class, the numbers MUST be different from the ones we have studied in class. a) Include an objective description of the works, which may describe aspects such as the following: size of the orchestra, melody, key and mode, rhythm/meter, form, harmony, texture, tempo, dynamics, instrumentation and mood, set, lighting, costumes, orchestra, as well as any other aspects that you feel will contribute to your discussion. b) Include a subjective reaction to the performance. This may include what thoughts/emotions you felt, what captivated you, etc. Your comparison of the musical characteristics of the chosen works must form the main discussion in your paper!
