Literacy and Numeracy Growth
A description of how the teacher in the classroom caters for the literacy and numeracy growth of children
Introduction
Education is a basic right to the human community. It helps in the development of the community socially and economically, thereof assisting persons to know and understand the world in which they live in. Teachers are able to carefully choose and use a varied number of books and articles to advance the emergence of literacy in children. The knowledge acquired is consequently shared with all of the other teachers in meetings and activities.
In the starting period with the children, the teacher chooses a book that observes a repeated emergence of counting. The children’s favorite may range from 1 2 Buckle My Shoe. The children in the course of using the book affirmed an understanding and interest in the numbers in contrast to the words used. The children develop an understanding and desire to use books that had a beginning with numerals and their familiarity (Dickinson, 2000). Their chanting and noises produced affirmed this. The children could hence attain benefits from the use of these books.
In the implementation of early literacy by the teachers which had a foundation in the children’s preferences and desires in their advancement. The teachers had to take more time from the numeracy activities in the beginning period which they believed was quite necessary for the children in the earlier stages of learning.
Children were hence able to develop a creative way to optimize their learning time with the connection to the start of numeracy. The beginning skill in the children that is developing displays a language that is steadily advancing in terms if reading and mathematics. The most important thing to consider was the provision of specific books that involved predictability and an attribution to the numerals.
The teacher’s involvement in the advancement of the literacy and numeric knowledge of the children can be applied in the development of the mathematical aspects of learning. On the other hand the use of books that involved numbers was given little consideration to uphold early literacy. The teachers ought to apply a method that involved a careful choice of books that upheld an effective and efficient literacy and numeral skills. The books chosen are ought to be applied to its optimum benefit to acquire the upcoming literacy and numeral skills.
The method applied to choose books are necessary as this will help the children to create a distinction between the symbols of literacy and numerals. Books that help to develop counting help in developing numeracy aspects. There are books that enhance literacy awareness involve topics that are conversant with the child, the use of books that involve pictures and text, predictable patterns and the application of rhymes among others. There are books that uphold early numeracy advancement such as the basic counting, promotion of the basic counting from 1-10 and the use of numbers that appear in different contexts as well as relations such as patterns among others.
There are additionally other methods that are applied by the teachers in the development of literacy and numeracy; these are the application of musical activities and tasks. To develop literacy there is the application of the listening skills, when a group is singing the children are encouraged to keep a keen attention to the words and rhythm of the song. The children are also encouraged to develop imagination; here children develop imagination of characters and positions (newman, 2011). There is consequently the singing, where children are able to analyze and expound on the sounds applied with the use of necessary vocabulary. The children are able to create phrases and sentences.
Similarly in the advancement of numeracy music helps through the repetition of songs like their learning of spellings and repetition of words. Counting is also a quite relevant way of remembering numerals as well as interesting. There is also the application of memory where children are made to remember hence developing their concentration skills.
Conclusion
Children development their literacy and numeracy skills through the application of certain books that are necessary. The teacher’s choice of books as well as manner applied relates well with the development in the children. Classrooms are consequently a habour for the development of literacy and numeracy growth of children.
