Prisons and Social Justice

This is a critical essay. Synopsis: For this assignment, you will select to write on the Prison Industrial Complex located within the Neoliberal movement and write a 10-14 page critical analysis of the concepts explored in class, in our readings, and experienced in your activist outreach. As this is a 4000 level course, an exit requirement, and, in many ways, a capstone experience, it is up to you to find, research, and write about an issue subsumed/implicated by the overarching narratives of the class (PIC, Neoliberalism, Joyful Commitment, Activism…..) Content: At a minimum your paper should include: 1. A one paragraph introduction in which you: a.introduce your issue, b. Comment upon its significance as an object of study, c. formulate a clear and concise thesis statement(i.e., identify what your text/issue is doing and how it is doing it), d. preview your argument/paper. 2. An analysis of your text using relevant principles discussed in class. The goal of this section is to effectively combine theory and astute critical observations. This is the body of your paper and should constitute the largest portion(problem/solution, problem/cause/solution, stock issues model. 3. A critical conclusion in which you briefly reflect on the implications of your analysis. This might include speculating about the role your text/issue plays in perpetuating, or challenging, the PIC, political affairs, process of socialization. or U.S. culture generally. Research Requirements: In the process of researching and writing this paper, you must include 10-20 independent pieces of supporting materials(course texts, academic peer-reviewed journal articles, interviews….) Grade: organizational clarity(20) Construction of argument(20) use of theoretical principles discussed in class(20) depth of analysis(20), and proper grammar and rhetorical artistry(20).
