The emperors club
Introduction
I chose the Emperor’s club because of the strong relations it has on the operation between the students and the teachers. The University Film Selection Committee should always base their selection on the impact that the intended film will have on both the students and the teachers. The aim of every learning environment is always to ensure that the teachers are successful in teaching their students while the latter are also successful in their efforts of learning. The Selection Committee should consider this before doing a selection on the film. The films should always be relevant to the activities in the school besides helping the teachers and the students morally. The film should be able to triggers the lecturers and the student towards having the intended relationship between the teachers and the students. Further, the film should also be able to address various issues and challenges that arise between the teacher and the students. These implies that the university selection team would only have to choose the film which has all the features.
The emperor’s club is a movie that will influence positively on the relation between the teachers and their students as it has direct relation to the everyday activities in an institution of learning.
Plot
The movie stars Kevin Kline (acting as William Hundert) with the setting being at a boy’s preps school. It is fictional since the boy’s prep school does not exist in the real life. William Hundert is a professor who is interested in the way the school year would look like. He is strict in all his classes and most of the students find the classes inspiring because of his lessons. Hundert inspiring his students to work hard towards becoming the contestants for the coming The Emperor;s Club. However, Hundert faces rebellion when Bell comes in as a new student, being a son to a US Senator. The rebellious nature makes Bell to rally many of the students behind him. Bell comes to test most of the Hundert’s principle and he threatens to paralyze all the action by the latter. This leads to a battle of wills between the two which results to close relationship between Hundert and Bell. The battle between Hundert and Bell comes to haunt him 25 years later after resigning from the school. It is after these 25 years that the teacher comes to a reunion with Bell in the same school.
Analysis
The movie brings out Hundert as passionate and principles and who would like to see his students being successful. This makes the movie to apply to real life situation where the teachers have the aim of exhibiting principles that will make their students pass. The movie presents the varying effects, both positive and negative, the teachers would have to face while in their profession. Humbert is a Professor of Classics who strives to make his students pass. However he faces challenges especially Bell who has put his effort towards going against his principles. Karten asserts, “There are several flaws in Hundert’s teaching methodology” which he put efforts towards fighting against (Karten). This makes the movies as it comes out to be relevant to the real situations that the teachers always pass through. The movie presents the different types of students that always exist in the learning of environment. Hundert is a character who presents the real situations that the teachers always go through. The realization that he had failed Bell and Blythe makes him feel that he had failed on his mission as a teacher. However, the warm reception from the students makes Hundert feel that he had not failed in his efforts of making better men from the student. He agrees and goes back as a teacher in the St. Benedict’s Academy.
Apart from the traits of the students, the movie also presents the various contributions of the students to the learning process. Masoudi is a laid back student who does not care about his success in Education. In this situation, the movie presents a student type who does not care whether he passes or fails in addition to the his or her untroubled nature in education. As the movie unfolds, an individual is able to realize on the ways that Hundert uses to solve the laid back nature of the students. The end of the movie marks Masoudi as successful depicting that the laid back nature was solvable. He goes past his laid back nature to become successful. The movie also presents Blythe who is an introvert, always keeping everything to him. The introvert nature of Blythe is what makes it difficult for Hundert to reveal that he had given away the Mr. Julius Caesar.
Persuasion
From the analysis of the movie, I would persuade the selection committee to consider purchasing the movie. The reason for the selection is because the movie rotates around three objectives which has direct relation to the learning process. These objectives are to provide teachers with adequate skills in managing their students, to promote hardwork among the students and to promote good relationship between the teachers and the students. The movie was able to achieve the objective of depicting the good management skills required by the teachers through the character, Hundert. The teachers have always faced various hard situations which make them to reduce on their efforts towards teaching their students. Karten asserts “Teaching at an inner-city high school may not be the life- threatening job faced by New York City firefighters, but that profession is considered by some to be the most difficult and stressful of all”. Consequently, the teachers would need a movie, which will encourage them towards fighting against the hard situations they are facing. Hunderts uses the situation presented by Bell as the best challenge and he would like to change him (Bell) while still maintaining his integrity. Hundert is a good role model for the teachers who would like to see themselves achieving their missions of making their students excel. Through his inspirations to the students, Hundert made his students to excel in their education. Further, Hundert also puts effort in ensuring that Bell excels despite Bell being against most of his principles.
The movie will also promote hard work among the students since it presents students who were able to succeed in their education. Blythe, Martin and Masoudi always heed to the principles given by Humbert with the outcome being their success. The students will always need good role model in order for them to work hard in their education. Humbert tells the politician father of the troublesome lad that the purpose of learning classic civilizations is to give the boys role models, people who have contributed greatly to their societies (Karten). Humbert had always insipired them that hard work is the only way to achieve success. This will also inspire the university students into exhibiting hard work as the movie depicted the students as successful because of their efforts. The movie will also encourage a good relationship between the teachers and their students as depicted between Humbert and the three students. The good relationship between the subjects is what leads to the success of both. The end of the movie depicts Humbert as happy because all of his students were successful while the students are also happy because of the same. This shows that good relationship between the teachers and the students is the only way for success.
Conclusion
The Emperor’s Club is a movie which every teacher would need to associate with because of the relevance of the plot to the learning process. The movie presents the different characters with each exhibiting traits, which relates to the everyday school experience. The movie applies to both the teachers and the students allowing them to learn on the proper behavior they should be exhibiting. The movie serves as a good lesson on what traits the teachers should posses in their mission to ensuring that their students achieve success. Further, the movie also illustrate on the different traits of the students enabling the university students to choose on which one they should be incorporating.
