Why I would make a good project manager
In a concert, conductor plays a very important role. Because each single music is played by different kinds of musical instruments, and each actor has different performance style and levels. So conductors need to constitute everyone as a harmonious whole, then they can create various types of wonderful music. A good project manager seems like a great conductor, he or she need to in charge of person from different departments and make them progress from a group of strangers to a single cohesive unit. In a project, a project manager must understand the scope, time, budget, resource, and how to organize a team at first time. So, project manager need to have a good quality and ability.
For me, I have no working experience before, but when I was an undergraduate student, I organized a lot of activities, the one most impressed me was to organized the Clothing Etiquette and Culture competition when I was the minister of public relationship department. I was the leader in this activity, seems like a project manager. Form preparation to the end of the competition, totally spent one month. During that time, I did a lot of work, such as project plan, organization, guidance, and control. The whole competitive was organized very successful finally. As I concerned, there are three reasons why I can manage it well.
Firstly, to satisfied audiences’ need and did a detailed plan. Before the project, I did some research in the students, I wanted to see if they think clothing etiquette and culture is meaningful in our life, and what formals of the competition will interested them. After that I wrote a project plan book, it includes both big picture and the small parts of this project. Such as the competition introduction and details of the competition’s process, scope, schedule, budget, control of the emergency situation, and I also used the software program to estimated the cost and schedule which made me feel more easily keep track of such complex project elements.
Secondly, after getting the approval of the school, I organized my team, I thought that Strong Matrix Organization is the best choice for our project. Because, the competitive was organized by public relationship department, I was the project manager in this department. In order to finish different works, we need some members from other departments. Such as students from the Propaganda Department responsible for the activities of publicity, students from logistics department were responsible for procurement. I Held regular status meetings to communicate with my team, and provided them a good working atmosphere where they can facilitate internal organizational communication well, and they will open themselves more willingly to share views and ideas effectively with me and other team members in this friendly atmosphere.
Thirdly, it is important to stay cool under pressure and to win the trust of the sponsor. During the project, the budget was overruns, but our school did not want to support us anymore, so we need to find sponsors by ourselves. It is so difficult for us to persuade the sponsors to sponsor our activity. I knew I encounter the biggest stressful event, but I stayed cool under pressure and encouraged me that to see it as an opportunity. We told the sponsors the specific process of our competition, and the expected affection in our school, after the hard working ,we earned the trust of our sponsors, they supported us 1000$ for this competition, I and our team members were very exciting and got more energy to do the next work.
