The final paper comprises a major part of your grade in the course. In graduate level courses, strong writing is required. Students are expected to follow rules of good academic writing. Please refer to the APA publication manual1 for information on writing style, quoting and paraphrasing the work of others, appropriate organization, and proper formatting. Please note that there are many electronic aids for references – even built right into Microsoft Word, but you must check these – they do not always give the most appropriate results – and claiming that it was how the program did the reference doesn’t excuse the wrong formatting.
The final paper should examine one of the issues brought forward in the class in depth. You may want to focus on a particular issue in a particular field, such as labor control in technical education settings or globalization’s effects in the sales industry; look more comprehensively at a historical issue – such as the change of computer programming from a field dominated by women to a field dominated by men; or the emergence or extinction of particular professions (lighthouse operator, social media specialist) or even how a particular profession has changed over time and the recent effects on this change (auto mechanics, university faculty, etc). There are lots of options for the topic, however your paper should be guided by one central question.
You should relate your paper to one or more of our assigned readings – and these should be referenced in the paper. You must additionally find five or more peer reviewed publications (journal articles are the most typical thing you’d probably find in this category) and reference these in your paper. This is not a listing or review of the items you’ve read – instead the paper develops related to your central question.
In order to find five or more peer reviewed references, you will need to use the Alkek library’s website and the databases to search. Please do not just “Google it” – or use any other general internet search engine – these will not get you the best results – and the journals you find will not be very comprehensive. Our library services and the journals to which we electronically subscribe should be utilized. Librarians can assist you in person in San Marcos, on the Round Rock Campus, or online. Please contact them early to assist you. This video has also been recorded for your benefit – it does refer to the literature review assignment – but the search engines covered will be most useful for you! The video will follow in this module.
The paper should include at least 6 pages of double-spaced text in the body (not including reference page, title page, etc.) Use headings per the APA publication guide. You should use an APA styled reference page and title page.
