III. Body paragraph
IV. Body paragraph
V. Body paragraph
VI. Conclusion
Sources Required :
Poem
Biographical source posted by me in your wiki
2 Secondary sources/discussions posted in your wiki
Length: 1,000-1,200 words
1. First, complete a draft of the full essay, using the structure and information from the “Rhetorical Organization” folder. Use the standard MLA Style for the header and other information that should appear at the top of the paper.
2. Then, review information about the drafting process in the handout–Criteria For Writing About Literature. See attachment below.
CONSIDERATIONS TO KEEP IN MIND AS YOU DRAFT:
•A. *USE PRESENT TENSE VERBS, except in the biographical paragraph. You do not have to document common knowledge (information like birth date, names of mother and father, etc.) You should gather the biographical information from the document I posted in each of your group Wiki pages. This document is also from the Modern American Poets website. You should look for important, unique information that may be related to the writer’s work to use as a direct quote for this section.
•B. MLA citations
(IN-TEXT CITATIONS & WORKS CITED PAGE)
*INTEGRATE ALL DIRECT QUOTES USING A VARIETY OF METHODS AND INCLUDE THE CORRECT IN-TEXT CITATION FOR EACH. THE HANDOUT YOU WILL NEED IS POSTED BELOW.
1. Poem: The first time that you quote from the poem, use an in-text citation that indicates that you are using lines and not page numbers.
Example: “ . . . ” (Frost lines 2-4).
You cannot use more than three lines of verse in this way. (See Handout.) Thereafter, when you quote from the poem, use an in-text citation that indicates the author name and only lines numbers with no comma between. Since you are using several sources, you should always indicate the author’s name, either in the quote introduction or in the in-text citation.
Example: “. . . ” (Frost 4-5).
2. Critical Discussions: Since you have no page numbers for these sources, you should include the author’s name in the quote integration. Therefore, the quote will end with no in-text citation.
Example: According to Stiefner, “______________ .”
However, if you do not indicate the author’s name in the quote integration, it will need to appear at the end of the quote.
Example: Frost’s works presents “___________________” (Stiefner).
3. Work Cited: You will have 5 entries. You have author’s names for all sources. Therefore, you must cite where you got the information from, which is the web site, not the information included at the end of each discussion. I will place one example here:
Stiefner, Adam. “On ‘Birches’.” Modern American Poetry. Web. 06 March 2014.
C. DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING WORDS: YOU, YOUR, I, ME, MY, MINE, VERY.
D. Please remember that the authors (Frost/Dickinson) do not speak in the poem. The speaker speaks in a poem. So when discussing lines from the poems, be sure include the correct phrasing. The poem belongs to Frost/Dickinson. Frost or Dickinson authored the poem. BUT Frost’s speaker speaks. It is the speaker whose voice we hear in the poem.
