hello!
Below is the exact assignment that is given. Please read carefully
Heart of Darkness Final Project
you will each research and debate the following question(s):
1. To what extent is Heart of Darkness a reflection of Conrad’s own worldview?
2. How distinct is Conrad from Marlow?
3. How much do their views overlap? How do they differ?
4. Put another way, is this a novella that comments on or simply endorses problematic views of race, gender, colonialism/imperialism, etc.?
Overview / Requirements:
→ The class will debate the question on Friday. We won’t do a standard opening statement, rebuttal, closing statement format. Rather, I’d like to discuss the issue above, with each of you bringing in distinct research/ideas so we can attempt to come to at least a provisional consensus to the issue.
→ In addition to the actual debate, you must each present distinct typed-up outline/notes that demonstrate you prepared for the debate appropriately. The notes should be fairly detailed and organized. The notes must include:
1) Specific quotations from the text of Heart of Darkness with parenthetical citations and commentary/analysis to support your thinking
2) Specific quotations from at least two resources in our edition of Heart of Darkness with parenthetical citations and commentary/analysis to support your thinking. Try to spread out and read separate articles from one another so we have a wide range of viewpoints.
3) A Works Cited page in MLA format (information MLA citation can be found at Purdue OWL’s website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/
Breakdown for what you have to do:
Give an analyzation to 3 or more of questions given above in relation to the novella Heart of Darkness. It is EXTREMELY important that you
1. Read the articles by Albert Guerard, Chinua Achebe, Ian Watt, Hunt Hawkins, Peter Brooks, Edward W. Said and Andrew Michael Roberts
2. Use the arguments in these “criticism articles” to answer the questions posed.
3. In each analysis of every question you MUST use quotes from the actual novella, use quotes from one or more of the criticism articles (and be able to cite EACH quote by who said it and what page)
4. Make sure the overall outline is organized by question or article. It is acceptable to use bullet points (under the category of the question you are analyzing or the article you are analyzing that answers the questions posed) as long as each bullet point is detailed, exemplifies a new idea eloquently, is said in complete sentences.
5. it is also very important the whole analysis itself is VERY neat and easy to follow and understand
6. Make sure there is a bibliography in MLA format.
