Book Review of Family by Pa Chin

The following is only a suggested format, but a very good one. You may find it appropriate to add, combine, separate, or rearrange some points.

Give the author’s purpose for the book.

Give the author’s qualifications and viewpoint.

Analytical Summary Paragraphs

Note the thesis or theme of the book.

Summarize the contents indicating how the thesis is developed. Use examples. While this will generally be the longest part of the review, you should make sure that your review does not become a mere summary without analysis.

Style and Presentation

Organization of the book.

Writing Style. (Word choice, paragraph structure, wit, readability, length, etc.)

Critical Analysis

What is the overall contribution and worth of the book?

How does the book contribute to our understanding of the subject matter or time period?

For what type audience would it be best suited?

Did the author accomplish his purpose?

Write the Review.

Use standard written English. Both grammar and style will be considered in grading. When in doubt, consult an English handbook.

Write in your own words. Use phrases or words of the author only to enhance and support your point. For any direct quotations from the author, provide a page number.

Properly cite your review. If you use the ideas of someone else—including those of a reviewer or the author of the book’s forward—be sure to properly cite these.
