Ebrey and Gernet provide a wonderful vision of life in China before the rise of the Mongols. Ebrey’s book is a scholarly exploration of the role of women in Sung Dynasty China, while Gernet opens a window into the social and economic life of Song China. Their descriptions, while directly associated with the Song, typify the experiences of Chinese in even later dynasties.
