1960’s Civil Rights Movements

Critical Thinking…The purpose of this assignment is to develop an in-depth analysis responding to ONE of the prompts below. Each topic then asks you to further narrow down your focus.

Paper should be 5-6 pages, following formatting guidelines. Writing guidelines, citation guidelines, and tips on writing an analytic paper are all on Blackboard.

No outside research is required or allowed. Draw on assigned readings primarily from the second half of the syllabus (directly citing at least four different texts, either primary or secondary ) as well as any in-class materials, films, or discussions to develop and support your thesis.

This is an analytic essay: do not try to tell me everything you read, saw, or heard. Part of the assignment is for you to select the most appropriate readings and materials to address the questions and your chosen focus within them.

Your essays must represent your own work. You may use up to one paragraph directly from one of your reading responses, if appropriate.

TOPICS—Choose ONE of the following topics, developing a focused argument within the framework set out by the prompts.

1. Select two or three major turning points in the late sixties and early seventies and explain why those particular events are so important and how they define what we think of as the sixties. You may chose any combination of political, social, or even popular cultural moments, but be sure you provide support for that aspect of your selection as well. You may include one point from earlier in the literal 1960s or the in the course, but if you do so you must demonstrate its impact on or into the later period.
