Hazardous Wastes and Contaminated Sites
Assignment 3 Discuss in detail one case study of a contaminated site (or class/type of sites)

One example you could consider for contaminated sites would be mining sites and the problem of Acid Mine Drainage (this option cannot be taken if you are also doing the Mining unit). An example of a hazardous waste that poses particular problems in Australia is PCBs while bioremediation/phytoremediation is an example of a treatment method. Resources for these topics are listed in the ‘intro and resources’ document.
The following materials will be supplied for this unit:-
1. A comprehensive learning guide for the unit. This guide includes links to many resources. It can be accessed from ‘Course Documents’, ‘Hazardous wastes and Contaminated Sites’ folder.
2. A document outlining the topics in the unit which also lists resources for the topics. These resources include videos, journal articles, booklets, internet sites. This is in ‘course documents’, ‘Hazardous wastes and Contaminated Sites’ folder.
3. A handout with diagrams and tables referred to in the introductory document. The references to ‘An’ refer to the first section of diagrams, ‘Bn’ to the section on PCBs and ‘Cn’ to the mining. The handout is available as pdf files from the ‘Hazardous Waste’ folder in ‘Course Documents’
4. A series of self-assessment quizzes, to help you with your understanding of the material. These can be accessed from the unit folder in ‘Course Information’
