One of the longest outstanding issues is whether Turkey should join the EU. There seems to in particular be some tensions between whether this is in line with the broader intentions of the EU versus the current situation. In this debate, you take the perspective of the of the European Union to argue whether it would be in the EU’s best interest to let Turkey join the EU.
Group 2 aligns with current EU views that the best way forward is to stop the official Accession negotiations with Turkey so that it does not become a member of the EU. Instead focus on collaborating within existing frameworks such as the Customs Union.
Group 1 argues that not letting Turkey become a member of the EU is a mistake, as Turkey’s membership is in line with the EU’s overall objectives and intentions, and Turkey is an important economic and strategic partner to the EU.
Remember that it is not about winning the debate, but about demonstrating your understanding and ability to construct and criticise arguments.
