Best Practices for Professional Communication Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to investigate what has been written and/or studied about Best Practices in relationship to communication in nursing and to practice the skill of synthesizing and summarizing literature in an efficient manner.
Each nurse will find three (3) scholarly articles (research or descriptive) that will increase the understanding of your chosen focused communication topic.Some examples of a communication topic include (but are not limited to):
• Communication between nurses
• Communication in the delegation process
• Communication in the hand-off or shift report
• Communication between health care providers (doctors; lab; radiology)
• Communication with families in critical situations
• Communication with facilities receiving a patient transfer
• Communication with first responders
The paper is to be written in APA format and submitted electronically. The paper should include:
Title Page (5 point; see example of a scholarly paper under the Files tabin Canvas)
Description of the focused topic (Introduction, 15 points): Include the importance of the topic
Review of journal article (3 articles X 5 points = 30 points):
Provide a summary and critical evaluation of each of the research studies/articles. As you summarize each reference, use your own words. You want to include each of the article’s authors (last names only), purpose (why the article was written), setting (if provided), what the article adds to our knowledge base, implication(s) of the findings or outcomes, and any strengths or limitations of the article. You will want to provide the information pretty much in the order as I have written it above (meaning, findings should not come before a description of what the authors did, etc.).The length of each summary should be 1/2 – 3/4 page.
Synthesis (25 points): Compare and contrast the articles (How the articles are alike and how they are different.)
Conclusion (15 points): Review what you have learned from the literature
Your paper is to be submitted electronically through the CANVAS assignment drop box.
Clarity/Originality (10 points)
1. Logical organization, written at the baccalaureate level
2. Correct spelling and grammar/syntax; Punctuation used properly
3. Appropriate length (no more than 6 pages plus the title page and reference page)
4. Paper in APA format
