2. Choosing one text from the first six weeks of the course (The Monk, ‘Christabel’, ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’, Lady Audley’s Secret, ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, ‘Berenice’) and one from the second (Dracula, Turn of the Screw, Rebecca, Rosemary’s Baby, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Let the Right One In), use a comparative discussion of these two texts to consider the following: how does the motif of the ‘monstrous feminine’ persist as a central trope of the gothic?
3. Choosing one text from the first six weeks of the course (The Monk, Northanger Abbey, ‘Christabel’, ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’, Lady Audley’s Secret, ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’, ‘Berenice’) and one from the second (Dracula, Turn of the Screw, Rebecca, Rosemary’s Baby, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Let the Right One In), use a comparative analysis of these two texts to discuss the troubled relation between the past and present in the gothic. You might consider this in terms of the persistent influence of the dead upon the living, or the resurgence of older, apparently outmoded, beliefs or understandings of the world.
