Late Impressionists, and Their Influence over post-Impressionism

Part I – Choosing a Topic

● You will be choosing a style/movement of art to do a presentation on.
● You can choose any style/movement from the provided list at the end of this handout and/or look through Chapters 17-21, in the textbook. The list focuses on art after the Gothic Perios, so if you might be interested in more ancient art, please feel free to suggest a style from there.
● Your book is a starting point for your lecture.
● Submit Topic: Please pick your top 5 style/movement choices, and submit your list in order of preference to the Topic for Major Assignment 2.
● Once your topic choices have been submitted, they will be reviewed and approved by the instructor.
● The topics will be assigned in order that the assignments that are received so get them in early.
● See the Style and Artist Topics section below for a list of topics.

Part II – The Research

The PowerPoint will consist of the following information, through your research:
● A clear definition of the style/movement, including what major formal characteristics are present in the general style. (How do we know an artwork is a part of your style?)
● A history of the how the style/movement developed. Set up the context for the work to exist. (What let up to the development of this style/movement? What was going on in history, society, and the art world before the style/movement came about?)
● What artists, if any (early art prior to the Renaissance, does not recognize individual artists) are categorized under your chosen style/movement? (Consider including their artworks and their self-portrait or photos in your presentation, to make it more interesting.)
● A minimum of 3 artwork examples that demonstrate the style/movement, including an ANALYSIS of what characterizes these artworks as part of your particular style/movement. (These major characteristics could be in discussing specific form and/or content/meaning of the work.)
● Each artwork that will be analyzed must be labeled with the title, artist (if present), date, medium, and collection the work is found in. Also, you must take notes of where you got the images from, so that you can properly cite them in your works cited slide (You will be required to include a Works Cited page in MLA format, as your last slide.)
● What influences did your style/movement have on future artists/art? (Show actual examples in your presentation (both artworks and artists) of the influence and explain how your topic was influential for this work/artist.)
● Include additional photos and other documentary images to make the design of the slides visually interesting. You will lose points for just including slides of text. Think about the lectures that you have in each module, where there is little to no text and just imagery. You do not have to keep the images devoid of words, but presentations are boring when you do not edit down your research into concise information. If you are going to add text consider bulleting the main ideas, and then elaborate on those ideas in your recorded voice-over.
