The Future of Journalism
From The Economist
“I believe too many of us editors and reporters are out of touch with our readers,” Rupert Murdoch, head of News Corporation, one of the world’s largest media conglomerations, told the American Society of Newspaper Editors. “No wonder that people, and in particular the young, are ditching their newspapers. Today’s teens, twenty- and thirty-somethings don’t want to rely on a god-like figure from above to tell them what’s important, and they certainly don’t want news presented as gospel.”
The Readership Institute (http://www.readership.org) is a newspaper industry group established to “find ways to draw people back.” Skim this article titled “Reinventing the Newspaper for Young Adults”:http://www.readership.org/experience/startrib_overview.pdf
Do you think that in the electronic age of TV and the Internet it is possible to draw young people back to reading newspapers? What will newspapers have to do to draw in young audiences? Or do you think newspapers will fade out as sense-intensive multimedia takes over?
