Pondering the Challenges of Implementation
You have completed your Plan of Action and are ready to implement your changes. Prior to beginning the implementation process you take a few moments to reflect on the how things might go. In contemplating your answers, be specific.
1. You are a new principal to the campus you are analyzing. Since you have worked on the analysis with only a small number of personnel (e.g., assistant principals, department heads, or other key individuals), how do you plan to introduce your analysis and Plan of Action to your faculty and staff as a whole? What specifically will you do and when?
2. Granted you do not know the faculty at the campus you are analyzing (but knowing faculties you have worked with at other schools), what do you suppose will be the reaction and response of the faculty upon presentation of the Plan of Action? List the various reactions you might encounter.
3. It has been said that you can’t please all the people all of the time. With this in mind, what reasons do you suppose faculty and staff might have for resisting your efforts either in part or whole particularly at the beginning? List the reasons for resistance.
4. Amazingly, some people will recognize the utility of your ideas and will be generally supportive. What will you do to encourage and strengthen their support? How will you enlist their support to influence the naysayers?
5. Some people are not the type to commit one way or the other to a position until they see how things are going to play out. What will you do to encourage people to participate in your Plan of Action as quickly as possible? How will you encourage latent resisters when they begin to drag their feet as the implementation unfolds?
6. The success of any change effort is dependent upon continued support and belief in the results. How will you keep the momentum of change rolling in your favor?
7. There is always a point of no return in working with those who are negative (or even hostile) to change efforts. What is that point of no return for you? How will you deal with an individual when they have crossed that point of no return?
8. How will you know when your efforts have been successful?
