| For the final paper, I would like you to write an analysis of Laila Lalami’s short novel Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits, in which you bring together the various aspects of globalization and cultural conflict that we have discussed over the course of the semester. You should bring in and incorporate 3-4 different sources/readings that we have done over the course of the semester. That is to say, you may apply the readings from Steger, Huntington, Barber, Todorov, Buruma, Berger, etc in framing your analysis. The novel as a culmination of much of what we have been studying, so I would like you to discuss any aspects of globalization that you find in the novel as well as allusions to cultural conflicts that arise in the novel. We can ask how the forces of globalization have shaped, impacted or perhaps intensified these conflicts and the decisions that some of the characters make. You do not have to discuss all of the characters but may choose to focus on one or two or those that best represent some of the ideas we have discussed.
