750-1000 wordsEmily Dickinson’s poem “I’m nobody! Who are you?” and Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice” deal with two poles of human interaction: anonymity and passion. Take one or both of these two poems and, having analyzed one of both of them, use it/them as a basis for analyzing the human interactions in two of the short stories read so far. Good candidates for such analyses would include Dobyns’s “Kansas,” Joyce’s “Araby,” Carver’s “Cathedral,” Updike’s “A & P,” Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Eggers’s “Accident,” but if you have another story or stories from our readings thus far that you would find a richer vein of ore to comment on, then go with that!

Comment on how “Cathedral” especially seems related to what little you are given here of Carver’s life, and in what ways the story differs from it. The poem about the picture of his father can also contribute to your musings. In the latter, is the “speaker” of the poem, who we are tempted to identify with Carver himself, an unreliable narrator? Why or why not?
