Presentation

DRUG: Avonex

 

1. Groups may consist of 2 participants.
   1. Participants will be individually graded based on individual contribution to the project. It is the responsibility of each team member to ensure that they are actively participating in the project.
2. At least three current references (within the last five years) from peer-reviewed scientific journals (Ex: Science, Nature, Cell, etc.) are required for the presentation. The textbook, Wiki, WebMD, and other websites are not considered appropriate references.
   1. These references must be typed out in APA format and provided at the conclusion of the presentation.  Less than three references will result in deduction of points.
3. Topics are to be presented without reading a script. The expectation is that each knows the topic very well; use of notes is only to organize and trigger thoughts. Reading notes will result in a reduced grade.
   1. It is the responsibility of the group to practice the presentation.
4. Topics are to be presented in a PowerPoint format.  Each member will be responsible for construction his or her PowerPoint; however, all presentations from individual members must be organized into one final PowerPoint presentation.

PAPER GUIDELINES:

 

A requirement for BIO1011 is to write a scholarly paper that focuses on a medical topic.The project is organized based upon two parts:  medicinal and pathological.  The following outline provides a guide for presentation/paper organization.

 

PART I:  Select a specific, current medication (perhaps from a commercial on TV) and address the following:

 

• What is the medication of choice?  i.e.  Zoloft
• What is the primary reason a patient would be prescribed this medicine?  i.e. depression
• What is the medication’s mechanism of action?  i.e.  How does this medicine work?
• What are the five most common side effects of the drug? i.e. nausea, drowsiness
• How are these side effects the result of the drug? i.e. Is this drug interacting with chemicals that contribute to nausea, drowsiness?   What is chemically making me drowsy?

 

 

The paper and presentation should be organized according to the outline above.  References are to be properly noted within the body of the paper according to APA guidelines.

 

OTHER PARAMETERS:

 

• One participate will focus on Part I.  Each student is required to produce 4-6 pages of data pertaining to the individual part.
• Papers are to be double-spaced, font of 12, with one-inch margins in APA format.
• Final papers will be collected from each individual participant.
• The oral presentation and the written paper will be worth 100 points each for a total of 200 points for the project.
• References minimum of THREEarticles from medically related peer-reviewed scientific journals (Medicine, Nursing, Science, Nature etc). (Use South University library databases to find the articles about the disease.)

• Additional Requirements:

o   Cover page with Paper Title, Name of Student, Student’s Program, Name of Class, Date

• • This paper must be written in an APA format.  Adequate documentation of sources (references) should be evident throughout the paper. References should be listed at the end of the paper and should follow reasonably accurate American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. o   Following the one-page Abstract, the paper begins with an Introduction section describing the general background on the topic. The main section of the paper is developed in subsections with subtitles focusing on different aspects of the topic. Paper ends with a Conclusion section summarizing the content and emphasizing the significance of the topic.

• • Encyclopedias and dictionaries, Wikipedia’s, consumer web sites or magazines WILL NOT be counted as professional references.
  • Page length: 4-6 PAGES for actual content on your topic. This does not include introductory material/abstract, title page, definitions, or references. Less than 4FULL pages will result in point deduction
  • Papers are to be typed, numbered, double-spaced, font 10-12pt

o   Plagiarism will result in a grade of zero for this paper (Turn-it-in similarities should be less than 20%)

• • Turn in a hard copy for grading AND an electronic copy to professor’s email

• The paper is due the final day of class during week ten (10) (9/3/15). Late assignments will be accepted only with prior approval; however, a reduction by one letter grade per day (10%) will apply. Assignments will not be accepted after 5 days from due date and a grade of “0” will apply.  Students are encouraged to work in groups of 2 for the presentations and share a common topic; however each student must write their own paper.
