Physical Hazards Control

Students are expected to prepare a written term paper of six full double-spaced pages to discuss the following for your topic of selection:

Content area 1 – Significant regulatory requirements

Content area 2 –  Potential hazards and typical areas where these hazards may be present

Content area 3 –  Any recommended methods for avoiding exposure to the hazards or to control the hazards.

DO NOT MAKE UP YOUR OWN CONTENT AREAS.  YOU MUST USE THE THREE THAT ARE PROVIDED.

You may select a topic from any of OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910 standards.  For a complete list of these standards, please reference OSHA’s website at:

http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owastand.display_standard_group?p_toc_level=1&p_part_number=1910.

The term paper will count as 150 points or 15 % of your final.  Once a topic has been selected it will be removed from the list of available options.  Please have your selection made by September 17, 2015Failure to seek pre-approval of your topic will result in a 50% deduction from the overall score if your topic duplicates any selected by another student.

Your final submittal must include all the following components:

  1. Cover Page
  2. At least six full pages of double spaced text.
  3. Works Cited Page
  4. Graphics Page (Optional)

Technical Requirements:

  1. The cover page must include:
    1. Title of Paper
    2. Course name and rubric number (Physical Hazards Control; OSHT 1309)
    3. Instructor’s name (Freddy Sustaita Jr.)
    4. Student’s name
    5. Date

  1. The report text must include your original thoughts, opinions, and recommendations.

Introduction:  Your very first action is to capture the reader’s attention.  Try to put your topic into terms that become personal for the audience so that he/she can relate to your topic.  Next, provide 1-3 sentences that lead into each content area to be discussed.  You may want to provide some relevant background information and alarming statistics about the topic you have chosen to write about that will continue to arouse the reader’s interest.  The last sentence of your introduction should clearly define the scope and purpose of the paper that you will address regarding your topic.  The statement of scope and purpose should look exactly like this:  “This paper will discuss the major regulatory requirements (content area 1), potential hazards and typical areas where these hazards may be present (content area 2), and any recommended methods for avoiding exposure to the hazards or to control the hazards (content area 3) associated with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1050.”

Body:  The body of the paper should clearly explain each of your three specific content areas in the order stated in your introduction.  This is where you will discuss the facts surrounding the topic involved, discuss your findings (providing specific examples), present your recommendations, or whatever information you feel is relevant based on the content areas you have selected.  You will need to include at least two in-text citations (each from a separate source) in each of the body paragraphs.  Others may be needed for the introduction and conclusion.  You must use at least one printed textbook and one printed periodical or professional journal (not from the internet).  Your third and subsequent references may be from the internet.  All references must have an author listed (do not use the reference if there is no author).  If your reference has no author identified then it is not a reference.  You cannot use it in your paper.  You will need to find another reference that has an author identified.

Special Note:  Wikipedia, Wikimedia, or Wikianything else you can possibly think of are strictly prohibited from being used as references for this term paper.

Conclusion:  Provide 1-3 sentences summarizing each content area discussed to recap some of the high points of your paper.  Next, clearly restate the scope and purpose of the paper by restating your three specific objectives.  The re-statement of scope and purpose should look exactly like this“This paper discussed the major regulatory requirements (content area 1), potential hazards and typical areas where these hazards may be present (content area 2), and any recommended methods for avoiding exposure to the hazards or to control the hazards (content area 3) associated with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1050.”  Your last sentence should draw a final conclusion leaving the reader with a strong message as to why you think this topic is important.

  1. The paper must be written using standard American Psychological Association (APA) formatting to include no greater than 12 point times new roman, arial, or calibri fonts only; and no greater than one inch margins on all sides. Failure to do this will cost the student 10-points for each occurrence.  Below are some online resources to help you with APA formatting.  I strongly encourage you to purchase a used APA Publications Manual to help you with papers in the OHST program.
