Using the articles we’ve looked at, articles you’ve read on your own and/or TED talks on technology, write a thoughtful, well-researched answer to the following prompt: In the past twenty years, technology has changed our lives in many ways. What is the one issue related to technology that worries you the most and why? Give concrete reasons for your concern, and cite experts who agree and disagree with you. What are possible solutions both on a personal level and globally regarding your concern? This is not an English 1 essay: I want to see you closely examine the arguments of others, not just write your own opinion with “light” support from others. Dismantle and examine what the experts are saying. Hint: you will have more fun if you find an expert you disagree with and you really get busy attacking his or her argument. The essay is intended to show your mastery of the topics we’ve discussed in the first weeks of the course: cogent arguments, conclusion supported by solid premises, good reasoning. In addition, I’d like to see that you’ve thought about the issues surrounding our use of technology: privacy, government intrusiveness, safety, social effects, ISIS using social media to recruit, etc. RUBRIC I will be looking for the following things in your essay: –A strong thesis statement that addresses the essay prompt. –At least three sources. Try not to use secondary sources: go to the real experts. Discuss why you chose these sources and why you trust (or don’t trust) them. Use all three of the modes of sourcing: summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation, and in each case make sure you cite the source. –A well-structured argument in which each paragraph builds on the previous. –Details not generalizations. Don’t just say “Google invades our privacy” or “Drones are scary” or “Technology can fall into the wrong hands.” Tell me what exactly you’re worried about, and give concrete examples. –Good transitions that help the reader follow your logic. –A careful, thoughtful analysis that weighs both sides of the issue. –A conclusion that answers the essay prompt, with reasons given. –A sense that you have thought about the “big picture” and how this issue affects more than just you, but our culture and our world as a whole. –No spelling or grammar mistakes: have a classmate read your paper or visit the Writing Center. The essay should be 5-6 pages, double spaced, not including the Works Cited page.
