Do a close reading of a poem or series of poems by either Emily Dickinson or Walt Whitman. Look at structure, word choice, imagery, and how it all adds up to make a poem. Does it all add up to something specific? Is there a clear theme? Feel free to compare and contrast with other work by the same writer. Please DO NOT analyze these poems: “I hear America singing” “As I Ebb’d with the ocean of life” “a noiseless patient spider” “the learn’d astronomer” or the first couple stanzas of “song of myself” by walt whitman. And by Emily Dickinson, we have already covered “faith is a fine invention” “i taste a liquor never brewed” “i like a look of agony” “i felt a funeral in my brain” “some keep the sabbath going to church” “i died for beauty” or “because i could not stop for death”(we have already went over them in class) You can choose mix it up(whitman AND dickinson) or just choose 1 author. Just make sure the theme or concept relates DO NOT INCLUDE PERSONAL FEELINGS, OPINIONS, ETC…ANALYTICAL, NOT EXPRESSIVE
