STRUCTURE AND CONTENT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER

Your project report should normally take the following form:

Title Page –

Abstract: (approx. 250 words), should take the style of an executive briefing explaining in outline what the project is about, the main research approach and the major conclusions/recomendations.

Chapter 1: Introduction (two or three pages or 5% of your report) Put your research project in context , explaining why the research is important. Identify the main themes and problems your project is investigating. Avoid too much general background info.

Chapter 2: Terms of Reference/Objectives & Literature Review (10% of your report) sets out the terms of reference of your research, what you are investigating and what boundaries you are operating within. Include research statement/hypothesis and research questions. Your literature review explains how key pieces of literature shaped your research approach. You can include literature that you agree or disagree with. To carry out effective research you need to be working to clear terms of reference from the outset.

Chapter 3: Methodology (20% of your report) describes and justifies your choice of research approach and data collection techniques. You should be critical of your methodology and include a discussion of why you have chosen the particular approach and techniques. You should include any discussion of how you are dealing with issues of a confidential or ethical nature. You will probably need to revise this chapter later as your research may lead you to alter your original plan. Where appropriate, bring out how the “triangulation” of methods reinforces the validity of your findings. Please include a discussion of piloting your main research method(s) and insights gained. Also discuss informed peer critique and insights gained. Ethical issues should be covered here. This chapter is a key chapter for assessors because it explains the methods you have chosen and why.

Chapter 4: Project/Portfolio Activity (25% of your report) Describes and analyses what you did – design, record etc. Alternatively, you may review an area of documentation on a particular subject in order to set the stage for your data collection. Avoid too much narrative. What helped or hindered your activities ? Show how your activities lead up to a testable situation that allows the research questions to be tackled.

Chapter 5: Project Findings (30% of your report) presents your results with full discussion and interpretation. It is insufficient just to say what your findings are – you need to analyse what they mean and fully interpret them. Where you are presenting a lot of numerical data it is important to include visual representations of major results. Even if your findings are of a qualitative nature you should consider breaking up the text and emphasizing a major point by use of a diagram or a table.

Chapter 6: Conclusions and Recommendations. (10% of your report) Your conclusions must be clearly drawn from your findings. Address the objectives and questions you set in Chapter 2. Recommendations should arise from the research project. Do not include any new material in the conclusion. This chapter should be clear and succinct and encapsulate the important issues and findings. Please include substantial insights, reflections on learning and action plans for further development of the project. Also, re-hypothesizing based on the findings plus avenues for further research.
