Where is the line between punishment and abuse, or is all corporal punishment abusive?

Corporal Punishment
This discussion focuses on corporal punishment, i.e. spanking. You may be aware that Sweden has outlawed the spanking of children. While no state has done that in the United States, that idea has its advocates.

Hitting children in school is no longer allowed in most places, as it one was. On June 16, 2004 the Houston Chronicle listed school districts that allow “paddling” in the Houston Metropolitan Area. HISD was not one of them.

In addition to relating your own experiences you should also comment on the side-effects of punishment and alternatives to punishment.
