This assignment is designed to test your understanding of sociocultural psychology. You need to explain how behavior and the concept of the “self” are affected by social forces. To help guide your writing I have provided three scenarios. Respond to each of these.
1) You are working on a project to develop a new product with several coworkers. Your coworkers have presented a potential product outline that they think is highly marketable. Privately, you disagree. Discuss how issues of conformity, majority influence, and minority influence may impact how you express your opinion.
2) You’re a political liberal from Massachusetts who has just moved to a conservative, mid-western community. Explain how your liberal, northeastern values and customs will affect your experiences in this new community.
3) You’re the only woman engineer in an engineering firm that is characterized as ultra-masculine. Discuss how this will affect your experiences in the work environment, and how you would interact with your male coworkers.
Be sure to include an explanation on how social influences that may alter perceptions of the self. You’ll need to discuss issues of conformity and group processes to do this.
