Literature Review Report: A written literature review that analyzes a current issue in environmental management and/or law is required. See course schedule for information on deadlines. Once you have chosen a topic and that topic has been approved by your instructor, construct a well-written and researched summary of the issue. A literature review provides a critical evaluation and interpretation of current published material that may identify gaps in knowledge revealing the need for additional research. This report should be 15-18 typed pages (not including reference and title pages) using Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, contain at least 15 properly cited relevant scholarly references (peer-reviewed journals) and a maximum of two websites. Use proper APA style for literature citations (in-text and references section). This literature review must contain four elements:
1) Introduction and Purpose (Objectives) (1-2 pages)
- central theme of paper topic
- reason for reviewing literature on this topic
- trends in what has been published on the topic; or gaps in knowledge
2) Literature Review on Topic (13-14 pages)
- group studies in some way (e.g. analytical approaches, conclusions, objectives, etc.)
- summarize each article (level of detail related to importance)
- provide reader with strong “umbrella” sentences to begin paragraphs
- summarize main points with “so what” sentences
3) Discussion (1-2 pages)
- maintain the focus established in introduction
- summarize main points you reviewed
- evaluate current “state of knowledge”, point out gaps in research, inconsistencies in findings
- Where do we go from here? Why study this question further?
4) References (1-2 pages)
- proper APA format
- make sure all references are cited within the paper and vice versa
There is a 3-step evaluation process: 1) first draft (5% of final grade), 2) second draft (10% of final grade), and 3) final draft (15% of final grade). The completed project will comprise 30% of the grade for the course. For each draft, points will be earned for: logistics (appropriate use of headings, spelling, grammar, formatting, etc.), Introduction/Body (writing style, organization, etc.), Discussion (appropriate summary of topic), References (formatting, in-text citation, organization, appropriate number and type).
