The objective of this essay is to apply Kidder’s models for ethical decision-making to the “Black & Decker Corporation: Spacemaker Plus Coffeemaker (A)” case.
The assignment has two sections. In the first section, choose one (and only one) of the four ethical Dilemma Paradigms and use it to analyze the core ethical issue in the case. Be sure to identify the ethical issue(s) in the case very precisely. Explain why the paradigm you select is most applicable to the case, as opposed to any other paradigms that might also be applicable.
In the second section of the assignment, choose one of the Resolution Principles from Chapter 7 (ends-based, rules-based, care-based) and use it to reach a recommendation about what the right course of action is for the principle actors in the case. Although more than one principle may be appropriate in each of these cases, you must choose the one that you believe is most applicable. Explain why that principle is more applicable to the case than the other two principles based on the facts of the case and your own values.
This essay is an exercise in logic and analysis. Your argument needs to be well-reasoned, supported by the critical facts from the case, and concise. Be sure to get right to the point and to use supporting evidence that is the most relevant to your argument.
In-text citations of sources (Kidder, the cases, other sources you may want to cite) should indicate the name of the author, date of publication, and page number in parentheses: (Kidder 2003:146). No list of references is necessary unless you use sources other than the class readings.
Length: five pages–typed, 1.5 spacing, 12 point font. Be sure to number the pages.
Please staple pages together, with your name and the course number on a cover page. Do not use folders, binders, etc.
