A veteran interviewer gave the following advice to one of her new employees as to what to do when developing statements from suspects or witnesses:
“Don’t make the written statement too perfect. We want a few mistakes in there.”
“This signed statement looks good. You’ve got your witness to the statement, but you’re not done yet with this investigation.”
“Always end it on a positive note.”
For each piece of advice, provide a 2 to 3 paragraph explanation of what the veteran interviewer is talking about and why it is good advice.
