You must submit your essay to Blackboard AND to Turnitin.com; both submission links can be found under Written Assignments in the navigation bar. To submit to Turnitin use the link titled Turnitin Submission for Visual Media Essay. This is REQUIRED. You will not receive any credit on your essay unless you also submit to Turnitin. To aid you in creating successful APA citations in-text and on the reference page, please view the videos for this week and use the checklist attached above to verify you have everything you need. Attached to this assignment is also an example of how to cite a print ad and how to cite a tv ad both in-text and on a references page. Use this as a guide – depending on where you find your ad, your citation may look slightly different. Analysis of Visual Media Essay: Ours is a visual world. We are exposed to visual messages constantly, and advertisements are meant to persuade us to buy a product or influence our behavior. For this essay, you are to select an example of visual media advertising and analyze it to see how it works to influence people. The goal of the assignment is to think about how visual images can be persuasive, and to use your written powers of persuasion to convince the reader that the ad is either effective or not effective. REQUIREMENTS: APA format for the entire essay: 12 pt. font Times New Roman, 1” margins, title page with header 3-5 pages of text. Does not include the title page or references page Third person narrative (do NOT use I, me, we, us, you in any essays in this class) Analysis of a SINGLE ad, not a group of ads DO NOT ANALYZE THE PRODUCT An APA References page with your ad cited. You must also cite the ad in-text. Submission of final draft to Turnitin.com and Blackboard PROCESS: First, select either a print or electronic media (television or web) advertisement for a product or service (select ONE specific ad to analyze). Be mindful that your essay must be 3 to 5 pages, so select an ad about which you can write substantially. Second, develop at least three criteria by which to analyze the ad. For example, you could analyze the appearance, the message, and the intended audience. Clearly present in the introductory paragraph the criteria by which you will analyze the ad. Your thesis should indicate either that the ad is effective, is not effective, or has both effective and ineffective features. You must have a clear thesis. Your conclusion should offer general recommendations to other advertisers if it is effective, suggestions for improvement if the ad is ineffective, or a mixture of both if the ad has both effective and ineffective qualities. Third, make sure you provide a reference page that lists the ad you analyze. Additional sources are allowed, but not required. Remember, when you cite a source (in-text parenthetical citation) within the text of your essay, you must provide a full citation on the reference page.
