a. Was that relationship different from the relationship between the U.S. and other European
nation’s representatives living in Japan? Was Japan’s relationship to "the West" (represented
in Yokohama) different from its relationship to the U.S.?
b. Yokohama is often referred to in this period as "a Western enclave." What does Roden’s
article suggest that mean?
