Analyze how the author uses literary devices and techniques to tell a nonfiction story. Some questions to consider (you don’t need to answer all of them): Does the author use figurative language? What purpose do the metaphors serve? Does the author use symbols or motifs? Does the author use irony to convey a message? Is the piece you’ve chosen an example of New Journalism? Does the author set a scene in the same way a filmmaker or writer of fiction does? Does the author’s writing style reflect the setting or mood of the story he/she is telling? Does the author have empathy for his/her subjects, and does that affect the way the reader receives the information presented?
Lastly, you may wish to discuss how this piece affected you. Do you think the way the article was written (that is, using literary techniques or emotion) affected the way you will remember its subject matter?
Your paper should
-Have a clear thesis statement in the first paragraph. Remember that a thesis statement is an opinion that can be argued. The purpose of your paper will be to use evidence to prove your thesis.
-Give the name of the article and author’s full name in the first paragraph.
-Use quotes from the article as evidence for your thesis and other arguments. As this is a short paper, please limit quotes to 3 sentences.
-Clearly show who is being quoted.
