Title: Andrew Jackson Downing, Creating the American Identity
Idea that American architecture is based and inspired around the book — “American architecture in the period 1780-1860 came from the book.”
Topic: Focus on Downing’s Newburgh Villa through the lens of how Downing created the identity of the American-single family home and how his rural idealism and emphasis on agrarianism is important in his books, house designs, gardens, etc. and especially in his Newburgh Villa.
Take one of Downing’s books and do a critical analysis of Newburgh with the concepts and arguments he makes one of the books with the aspects that I mentioned above.
Downing was part of the Hudson Valley School (might want to look into this)
