A reflection is simply a critical examination of what kind of emotional response a work of art incites in you. (This is different than an analysis in which you will break down the components of the painting and discuss whether or not it’s successful.) The focus isn’t so much on the why (as in composition, era, or technical aspects) but simply on the emotional response you have to the work of art. Because of this, some personal story telling may be in order to fully understand your response to it.
You can love the work or despise the work. What you can’t be is absolutely neutral.
This paper is designed to begin your exploration of art and how you see art intersecting your life.
. It must be in Times New Roman size 12, double spaced (make sure your paragraph before and after settings are at 0), and any and all outside references must be cited (including images).
Things to Consider:
1. Painting or sculpture or building is given proper context (historical, social, etc), artist is also given context.
2. Discuss the reason the piece of art was chosen and your narrative is sincere (i.e. not sarcastic or over loaded with purple prose).
3. In order to believe your reflection, you need to show an intersection with your life and the painting (like what state of mind were you in when you first saw the painting).
4. Outside sources need to be used and properly cited (APA or MLA).
