  • Attendance Recovery Research: Research and summarize one attendance/dropout recovery program —
    1) one elementary to intermediate/Junior High attendance recovery program
    OR
    2) one high school based attendance/dropout recovery program
    The summary should consist of a five page paper addressing points to consider (see below).
    Points to consider:
    1. What are the basic properties of the program?
    2. Evidence of effectiveness/Success rate
    3. Weaknesses/strengths of the program
    4. Budget concerns
    5. Target population
    6. References (cited in APA format)
    The main concept is, like the sample, start with a brief summary of basic information about your school district or school site- demographics, truancy rate or specific subgroups that have attendance problems.
    Next, make some specific suggestions for school-wide/universal level to improve awareness of the importance of school attendance (examples could include Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports-PBIS; Most Improved Attendance Recognition assemblies for students and/or for highest class % of attendance. You would only need to choose one or two school-wide strategies.
    Assignment #4 Attendance Recovery Research (5 pages)

    PLNU Student Name: _____________________________ Date: _______________

    Attendance Recovery Research: Research and summarize an attendance/dropout recovery programs — one elementary to intermediate/Junior High attendance recovery program to reduce truancy and/or chronic absenteeism or one high school based attendance/dropout recovery program. Summary should consist of one five page paper addressing points to consider (see below).
    1. Research and summarize attendance/dropout recovery programs. You are creating a “Proposal” to your school site/district administration on how to effectively address truancy reduction, chronic absenteeism and dropout prevention. Utilize the pyramid approach based on the Institute of Medicine Model (similar to pyramid in RtI) to focus and prioritize efforts:
    a) Universal student population (majority of students/school-wide);
    b) Selected student population-targeted students exhibiting behaviors of concern (truancy, frequent tardies, suspensions, office referrals);
    c) Indicated student population – students exhibiting high-risk for truancy/chronically truant/high-risk for dropout.
    2. Research and summarize at least one evidence-based/research-validated prevention or intervention program (Aggression Replacement; PBIS; Reconnecting Youth; Project SUCCESS; PIQE; Brief Intervention; Parent Project) and how you will utilize it to reduce truancy, chronic absenteeism rates/dropouts. Refer to these sources for options:
    • National Registry of Prevention Programs (NREPP)
    • NREPP is a searchable online registry of more than 160 interventions supporting mental health promotion, substance abuse prevention, and mental health and substance abuse treatment
    • http://www.nrepp.samhsa.gov/
    • California Healthy Kids Resource Center
    • Research Validated based on 3 key factors: 1) Behavioral Outcomes; 2) Published Research; 3) Materials Ready for Implementation
    • http://www.hkresources.org/c/@Mi8p.._.LNHOY/Pages/rvalidated.html
    3. Highlight elements appropriate for elementary to intermediate/Junior High attendance recovery programs for individual students, and classroom level and school-wide youth development strategies to support engagement of all students. If serving in a district with high schools – include a dropout recovery plan for individual high-risk students.
    4. Points to consider:
    1. What are the basic properties of the program?
    2. Evidence of effectiveness for the core strategies/success rate
    3. Weaknesses/strengths of the program
    4. Budget concerns
    5. Target population
    5. References (cited in APA format)

    Then select a targeted intervention for “Selected” level students that are starting to be truant/chronically absent. Some examples are: 1) Check-In/Check Out daily with School Counselor or CWA staffer (student would come to Counselors office before school everyday to “check-in” and then at end of day to “check out”; 2) Brief Intervention for substance use issues interfering with attendance; 3) Forward Thinking/Reflective Journaling for students that have poor peer relations, gaps in social skills, anger issues that interfere with attendance. 4) referral to District School Attendance Review Board (SARB).

    Then interventions for “Indicated” level students that are habitually truant and may have frequent suspensions that impact learning/attendance. Look at the list of intervention strategies, I have posted detailed fact sheets on the assignment # 9 Comprehensive Intervention plan assignment, for example- Aggression Replacement Training (ART) for kids who are having anger management, poor coping skills.
    Choose only one main intensive intervention program (ART; Project SUCCESS; Reconnecting Youth) describe why you picked that solution and how it fits your target population for truancy/chronic absenteeism issue. These details
    are listed in the fact sheets posted on assignment #9 (the fact sheets list evidence of effectiveness and whether it works effectively with diverse populations, etc. Describe costs, training needed to implement, where it will be implemented, by whom.
