This essay should meaningfully incorporate the ideas and themes of the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Animal Farm, along with any other relevant works from the other units. It’s up to you to see the sense in this. I want us to hash this out on Discussion Board. But I’ll give some preface.
In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest we see prisoners and we see a teacher. In Animal Farm we see how individuals abdicate their power to choose. Hmm. In the film we see an individual facing an institution (a cave) and trying to free a prisoner, Billy Bibbit. In Animal Farm we see the farm animals trying to liberate themselves. In both something horrible goes wrong. This is the issue I want you to look at. The film represents key ideas on a personal and inter-personal level, and the novel address the same basic issues on a societal and cultural level.
Remember, on a very real level these struggles have been going on through out the history of civilization. On another our current time is mirrored. On another level aspects of all our personalities (minds and hearts) are revealed. Therefore, this essay offers itself to a personal narrative form, as with the first essay, or it lends itself to a broader application, what you observe about life in general, or a specific aspect of life in our culture.
Fromm, Camus, and Plato all tie in to these unit three materials. Your third essay will generate a thesis that conveys an understanding of what you’ve read and understood this semester.
