Students are expected to prepare a written term paper of six full double-spaced pages to discuss the following for your topic of selection:

Content area 1 – Significant regulatory requirements

Content area 2 –  Potential hazards and typical areas where these hazards may be present

Content area 3 –  Any recommended methods for avoiding exposure to the hazards or to control the hazards.

DO NOT MAKE UP YOUR OWN CONTENT AREAS.  YOU MUST USE THE THREE THAT ARE PROVIDED.

You may select a topic from any of OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910 standards.  For a complete list of these standards, please reference OSHA’s website at:

http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owastand.display_standard_group?p_toc_level=1&p_part_number=1910.

The term paper will count as 150 points or 15 % of your final.  Once a topic has been selected it will be removed from the list of available options.  Please have your selection made by September 17, 2015Failure to seek pre-approval of your topic will result in a 50% deduction from the overall score if your topic duplicates any selected by another student.

Your final submittal must include all the following components:

  1. Cover Page
  2. At least six full pages of double spaced text.
  3. Works Cited Page
  4. Graphics Page (Optional)

Technical Requirements:

  1. The cover page must include:
    1. Title of Paper
    2. Course name and rubric number (Physical Hazards Control; OSHT 1309)
    3. Instructor’s name (Freddy Sustaita Jr.)
    4. Student’s name
    5. Date

  1. The report text must include your original thoughts, opinions, and recommendations.

Introduction:  Your very first action is to capture the reader’s attention.  Try to put your topic into terms that become personal for the audience so that he/she can relate to your topic.  Next, provide 1-3 sentences that lead into each content area to be discussed.  You may want to provide some relevant background information and alarming statistics about the topic you have chosen to write about that will continue to arouse the reader’s interest.  The last sentence of your introduction should clearly define the scope and purpose of the paper that you will address regarding your topic.  The statement of scope and purpose should look exactly like this:  “This paper will discuss the major regulatory requirements (content area 1), potential hazards and typical areas where these hazards may be present (content area 2), and any recommended methods for avoiding exposure to the hazards or to control the hazards (content area 3) associated with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1050.”

Body:  The body of the paper should clearly explain each of your three specific content areas in the order stated in your introduction.  This is where you will discuss the facts surrounding the topic involved, discuss your findings (providing specific examples), present your recommendations, or whatever information you feel is relevant based on the content areas you have selected.  You will need to include at least two in-text citations (each from a separate source) in each of the body paragraphs.  Others may be needed for the introduction and conclusion.  You must use at least one printed textbook and one printed periodical or professional journal (not from the internet).  Your third and subsequent references may be from the internet.  All references must have an author listed (do not use the reference if there is no author).  If your reference has no author identified then it is not a reference.  You cannot use it in your paper.  You will need to find another reference that has an author identified.

Special Note:  Wikipedia, Wikimedia, or Wikianything else you can possibly think of are strictly prohibited from being used as references for this term paper.

Conclusion:  Provide 1-3 sentences summarizing each content area discussed to recap some of the high points of your paper.  Next, clearly restate the scope and purpose of the paper by restating your three specific objectives.  The re-statement of scope and purpose should look exactly like this“This paper discussed the major regulatory requirements (content area 1), potential hazards and typical areas where these hazards may be present (content area 2), and any recommended methods for avoiding exposure to the hazards or to control the hazards (content area 3) associated with OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1050.”  Your last sentence should draw a final conclusion leaving the reader with a strong message as to why you think this topic is important.

  1. The paper must be written using standard American Psychological Association (APA) formatting to include no greater than 12 point times new roman, arial, or calibri fonts only; and no greater than one inch margins on all sides. Failure to do this will cost the student 10-points for each occurrence.  Below are some online resources to help you with APA formatting.  I strongly encourage you to purchase a used APA Publications Manual to help you with papers in the OHST program.

Citing Sources in the Text:  APA offers a few different ways that an author can cite sources used in the text of a document based on what the source is.  Because this can be a slightly complicated process, I will offer one standardized format for students to use based on APA guidelines.  When citing a source in your text simply write what you are borrowing from the source and in parenthesis, include the source author’s last name (or organization name) followed by a comma and the year the source was produced.  The following is only one example so please review the APA manual for other types of sources.

According to the National Safety Council’s textbook Accident Prevention Manual for Business and Industry:  Administration and Programs, there has been criticism that some reward and incentive programs encourage employees to under report incidents and injuries or encourage supervisors to misuse light duty options (NSC, 2001).

DO NOT TRY TO USE ANY OTHER METHOD

Preparing your Works Cited list:  There are several different sources that you may be eligible to use in preparing your document.  The APA manual will help you greatly in preparing your Works Cited list for the sources that you select.  Textbook entries into the list will look slightly different from websites, which will look slightly different from magazine articles, which will look slightly different from television documentaries, etc…  Note the following example which corresponds with the example above (the OSHT 2309 class textbook) which would be considered a book by a corporate author:

National Safety Council (2001).  Accident Prevention Manual for Business and Industry:  Administration and Programs.  Itasca, Illinois:  National Safety Council.

The general format requires the following:

Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Initial., (Year).  Title of Document in Italics.

Anything that follows after those three pieces of information will be dependent upon the resource.  Textbooks will require:  Publisher’s City, Publisher’s State:  Publisher’s Name.  Periodicals will require after the (Year):  Title of Article.  Title of Periodical in Italics, volume number in italics (issue if available).  The bottom line is…if you have questions…look it up or ask.  The Works Cited List must also be in alphabetical order by author’s last name.  If a reference does not have an author listed then DO NOT use it.

  1. All internet sources should include the complete path leading to the specific area of the website where the source originated. For your Works Cited list, the entry should look something like the following example which would apply for an online manuscript or working paper:
